Sarah and Abram / Abraham were the parents of Katie Drucker, Stan’s grandmother.
Abraham was born circa 1867. He emigrated to the United States ahead of his family, and according to the 1905, New York State Census, he was living with his brother-in-law, Israel Kwartel in Manhattan. Israel was married to Regina, who we assume was Abram’s sister.
We also learn that he had been here for 6 years and was still an alien. He was working as a “cloak ironer”. They were living at 99 Orchard Street. [1] Today, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum is located at 97 Orchard Street.
Abram’s daughter, Katie, emigrated alone at about age 14. She is about 16 when she posed for this picture with her father. Did they send it back to Sarah in Austria so Sarah could see how well they looked?
In 1906, Sarah arrived with the yougest three of their children. They sailed on the SS Furnessia [2] which sailed from Glasgow to New York.
How did they get to Glasgow? They must have been quite an adventure. Did they take a train and then another ship? Did they walk part of the way? [3]
They left on June 9, 1906 and arrived in New York on June 19, 1906.
In 1902, the third class fare was $26.00 person. For the family that would have been about $104. [4]
Thta would be equilavent to $3,722.10 in 2023. [5]
Sarah had not seen her husband for 10 years. The children were now 15, 10, and 8. Their oldest daughter, Katie, age 18, emigrated alone in 1902. After passing through the inspections at Ellis Island, she had to wait longer than expected to see him. The family was detained and were served four dinners while waiting for Abraham to arrive. Remember that Sarah did not speak English. She must have been frightened not understanding what was going on. However, there were usually interpreters wandering around Ellis Island who hopefully were able to explain to her why she was detained.
Once Abraham arrived, they headed to 152 Allen Street in Manhattan on the Lower East Side. Their apartment building was built in 1900 and was 5 stories high. See what it looks like today. [8]
In 1910, the family was living back on Orchard Street. Abram was working as a pant presser. We also learn that they had five children with four living.[9] Their oldest daughter, Katie, was now married and living with her husband.
Stan was named after his great-grandmother, Sarah.
At this time we do not know when she or Abram died or where they are buried.
